In the ruins on the island of Titicaca, windows, door-posts, and thresholds, are of stone; but the general character of the architecture is inferior to the ruins on the island of Coati, in the same lake. In ignorance we can only imagine and co jecture whence and when came these marvelous productions of a forgotten age. We pause, gaze, and silently wonder. The cities of the plains, Baalbec, Palmyra, Palenguc, and the Mound Builders, evidently belonged to races that lived long after the creation of some of these standing around Titicaca. Here are the ruins of temples and idols unknown to tradition or legend. Here an immense lake has sunk perpendicularly 135 feet, more than half the measure of its vast waters, leaving villages and ruins many leagues distant on its ancient shores; and time has hushed even the faintest echoes of the voices of a civilization possibly ripe before the dawn of the Christian era in the eternal silence. Here, before the days of the Incas, were three distinct races of men, whose craniums and configuration show that they belonged to periods of time anterior to the dawn of either tradition or legend in Peru; races to which science and ethnology deny a common source or a common brotherhood! Tradition, in Peru, reaches as far back as the first Inca, Manco Capac, and the deluge; but, before that time, the names of the gods of the inhabitants, with their creed and crumbling altars, are as much unknown as though they belonged to a former world I Even gabbling, gossiping legend, is to many of them more noiseless than the stones from which they were constructed. These mute, colossal witnesses, show and prove that they have been built by the hands of men, mayhap by giants; but as to when or how, the imagination of man can only feast on...
